On Wednesday, November 4, Comanche Nation Higher Education held a College and Career Day at FISTA in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Students and adults from across the area attended the annual event.

Higher Education Director Leslie Cusic said they split the day into two sessions, with high school students being the morning group.

“Our high school, we took care of that in the morning. They came in, we had a great time, we had great sessions,” she said. “It's really live when we get the students going and get them all excited about visiting vendors, getting information for their next chapter in life, which that's what we're here for, to help them, guide them into that next chapter. They visited vendors, we gave away great door prizes. They love to come for that. But we also have some really great vendors. They come every year, they support, and they're awesome.”

Cusic said her favorite part is seeing the attendees get excited about the things going on.

“And when they get excited, not just about the door prizes, things like that, but about visiting with people,” she said. “And it kind of gets their minds going: ‘What can I do?’ ‘What's my future look like?’ And that's what we like to see. We love to see students that realize their potential.”

Higher Education also supports vocational students.

“We're here for adults, too. Non-traditional students. Students that may have gone to school, stopped, want to go back,” Cusic said. “Students that need a skill. We also are here for them, too, and that's what our afternoon session is about. Students that want a skill. Students that, like I said, maybe need to go back to school. They're wanting to transition into another career.”

Their afternoon speaker was Julian Love, who went through their program.

“He is a student of ours. He went through the firefighter program, graduated, now he works for Lawton Firefighters,” she said. “He is here, and he's one of our speakers for the afternoon session. And we can't wait to hear what he has to say to encourage our students.”

The vendors are the main part of College and Career Day.

“A lot of our vendors are the same ones that we have every year. They're loyal. They're here. They're ready to go. And then a lot of them, they've actually contacted us. So, we went ahead, and we're like, yeah, we would love to have you,” Cusic said. “We don't turn anybody away, because we know that for every vendor, there [are] students out there that need to speak to them. So, yeah, we love our vendors. They're so helpful.”
